According to a 2014 report by Smart Company, Jobider conducted a study and found approximately 30% of the Australian workforce are freelancers. That is equivalent to 3.7 million Australians who contribute up to $51 billion to the economy. Of this total, around 19% freelance in addition to having a traditional full-time job.

A 2013 report by Quartz states that over 40% of the American workforce will be freelancers by 2020. That is more than 60 million people. The Quartz report cites 2006 figures from the federal government that show around 42.6 million or 30% of the workforce were independent and contingent workers (e.g. contractors, temps, self-employed).
